Gaelynn Lea: winning the battle
Violinist Gaelynn Lea is interviewed by sisters Annie and Cecilia Galke before her performance at the MidWest Music Store in Winona, Minn. on Saturday, October 8.
Gaelynn was brought to national attention when she won National Public Radio’s 2nd annual Tiny Desk contest, in which entrants submitted a video of themselves performing behind a desk. According to NPR, Lea’s submission was selected from more than 6,000 entries. She was flown to Washington, D.C., where she performed songs by herself and with bandmate and fellow Duluth musician Alan Sparhawk.
The YouTube video from this performance has since had over 700,000 views and her video submission has over 400,000 views. Gaelynn is now touring full time with her husband, primarily playing solo shows, and occasionally with The Murder of Crows, her project with Sparhawk. The two song clips featured in this video are “Your Battle” and “Bird Song”

Annie (or is that Anne?), Cecilia, Joe & Gloria, thank you for your touching visit with Gaelynn. Galke sisters, I am moved every time I watch and listen. Gloria, I love how you put the visit into words. And Joe, your invisible presence shining your sense and light and ears on it all made it so those of us not there could share the special moments Annie, Cecilia and Gaelynn shared. Love the photos. And the sidewalk welcome . . . a very simple, but special touch.
PS. Now I’m off to send this to Frederick. Somehow, I think it will stretch even his smile!!!

Nice job ladies ! Gaelynn is my favorite fiddle player, and one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Love her voice and lyrics.
