Optimistic opener for football team

The seniors on Cotter’s football team are excited for this upcoming season and their result at P-E-M showed why.

Seth Haun has taken over the job as Cotter’s head football coach and athletic director  from Shane Hedeen.

Haun, who played college football at Winona State, had previously coached the Ramblers in 2013 when Bruce Carpenter stepped down early in the season. Haun’s return to coaching has brought a lot of excitement to the program.

“We have a lot of trust in Coach Haun and he puts a lot of trust in us as well, he knows how to run a successful program and we won’t hesitate to do what he asks us because we know that it’s best for the team” said senior tight end and defensive end Noah Nachtigal.

The team is led by its seniors and has more experienced players than Cotter has had in recent years. “The seniors have good leadership and that is encouraging for the younger kids” said senior tailback and linebacker Josh Salwey.

“The experience will definitely help on the field” senior lineman Jacob French added.

The team is coming off a strong performance in a 33-19 loss to P-E-M last Friday in a Southeast district crossover game. They were competitive throughout the entire game against a team that has played for the class 3A section 1 title the last 2 years. Cotter had a chance to tie the game late in the 4th quarter but were stopped on a fourth and goal play.

“We played well and competed against a tough team. The team should be proud of their effort,”  Haun said. “Overall, I’m pleased with the season.  We have a lot of work to do before the end if we want to continue to compete.  Hopefully the game on Friday night was not a fluke, but rather is the beginning of something better for Cotter football.”

The Ramblers return to action on Friday, September 9, when they host Pine Island at Winona State. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
