Fall Hunting 2013 Preview

photo 3The ducks are flying and the deer are snorting, the 2013 fall hunting season is more than under way. Whitetails flood the freshly chopped corn fields and mallards dive into wild rice puddles. The Mississippi River Valley is known for prime hunting conditions with its seemingly unlimited ponds and fields eager to be hunted. Buffalo County is known nationwide  for its spectacular deer hunting and it actually leads the nation in most Boone& Crocket bucks killed. The bow hunting season is more than half way through and the deer are definitely moving. With the rut coming soon, the best hunting is only soon to come.

Not only do we grow the deer large here, but we have the ducks in hordes. On the Minnesota side in this point of the year, most of the wood ducks have moved down south because of the cold weather, but there does seem to be a few teal still hanging around. With a cold front up north many hunters hope it will push the Mallards down.

Across the River in Buffalo city most hunters report that the divers have yet to show up and many people are struggling to shoot ducks. Large bays offer exotic diver ducks like Buffleheads, Canvasbacks, Ring necks, and Red heads the perfect haven. The cold November days are just around the corner and will soon bring the next waves a ducks down to the river valley.

Down the river in Indian Creek, most hunters have given up on the struggling season. Unless you are willing to travel and work hard to shoot ducks, it’s going to be hard to find ducks. The overgrown creek has swallowed up many ponds and sloughs that once housed an overflowing amount of wood ducks. Indian Creek is on a downward slide and soon will be swallowed up by weeds.

Not to worry, though  gun season for deer is almost here.
