Penny Wars raises funds for leukemia research money
When it comes to giving, apparently there is strength in numbers.
The annual Cotter Penny Wars, sponsored by the school’s National Honor Society, ran from Monday, April 11, to Friday, April 15.
The goal of the Penny Wars is to raise money and awareness towards a cause, this year the money is being donated for research on lymphoma and leukemia.
The junior class used their strength in numbers to dominate the annual penny war contest, who were rewarded with a dress-down day and a treat. The race involved seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, who helped to raise $500.
The four pillars of National Honors Society are community, scholarship, service, and leadership
” I do believe it is a perfect example of our service and leadership pillars. We take responsibility to lead the school to raise money that is donated to a great cause,’Brennan Schaffner, a National Honor Society member said.
“It went better than last year’s penny wars,” Mrs. Frisby, the NHS adviser said.
The group’s efforts have a dual purpose, to fight leukemia and lymphoma, and to teach students that through a small act of cooperation and volunteerism they can contribute to a larger cause.
