Softball team aiming one step higher

Last year’s team finished as the sub-section runner-up, but this year they aim for more.

Coach Pat Bowlin thinks this team has a chance to conquer the conference, the sub-section, and the section.

Last year’s team finished with  a 16-1 conference record and was 20-5 overall. The team’s middle infield is suffering from the loss, of Kelly Vaselaar to graduation, and shortstop Gabby Bowlin will miss the season due to an ACL injury suffered during basketball season. These losses will force players to try new defensive positions.

Seniors Mikala Nelton and Kirsten Weifenbach are key players this year. Nelton was an all-conference catcher last year and Weifenbach will be playing the infield this year hoping to fill the gaps left by the loss of Bowlin and Vaselaar.

The key to success this season is the team is working to get better everyday, but particularly on defense for the aforementioned gap in the infield, but with such a talented team this may be an obstacle the team can overcome.

Players just need to play by their fundamentals and their experience. Bowlin wants the team to be more efficient at a hitting

From a pitching standpoint, the team is set, they have frosh Isabel Northrop returning who had 138 strikeouts last year with an ERA of 1.59. Northrup hopes to push the strikeouts higher and ERA lower this season.

Some key games Coach Bowlin wants the team primed for are when the Ramblers face Spring Grove, Caledonia, Plainview-Elgin Millville, St. Charles and Chatfield.
