Sports Banquet Recaps Fall Season
As a final hurrah to sports teams after the fall season, the activities office put on a sports awards night to celebrate the accomplishments of the teams.
The event was held on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in the John Nett gym at 7:30. Before the coaches spoke about their teams and handed out awards, all of the teams had individual team time prior to the large group meeting.
Mrs. Jenny Carpenter, activities director, started out the night with a heartfelt speech about the both the difficulties of the season and the support that radiates through the Cotter community. She also relayed some small moments of teammates being accountable to her that coaches had shared with her, times when they really stepped up to the plate to help out teammates or opponents.
Mrs. Carpenter also defined the Rambler award given to a member of each team.
This was followed by coaches from each team recapping their season and handing out individual awards..
First to speak was the girls Soccer coach Marie Barrientos, who talked about how, even though the last game was not a victory for the team, they played a tough game and really grew as a family over the season.
Boys soccer coach Oscar Uribe, who is also the principal of Cotter, highlighted the improvement in both wins and losses and goals for and against during the season.
Volleyball coach Brian Masyga spoke of his transition from assistant to head coach and noted the increase in wins and competitive matches the team delivered this season, despite often giving up size and experience to opponents.
Coach Burt of the girls combined swim team delivered a shorter than usual, but not brief, recap of the girls season, highlighted by a noteworthy performance by Morgan Whyte.
Blake Duden, girls tennis coach, also noted the teams improvement and how a number of the teams top performers are young and improving, generating hope for a continued upswing in the program.
Mr. Seth Haun, the interim football coach, lauded his players for effort and commitment and their impressive performance in the playoff loss to Triton. Coach Haun spoke of the praise that several opposing coaches gave the team late in the season.
Mr. Forney praised the girls cross country team for its tight-knit camaraderie and development and gave credit to both new and returning members for the team’s development and improvement.
Finally, Mr. Costello brought the boys cross country team up to congratulate them on earning their third state trip to the State meet in Northfield.
