DIIV is back: Is the Is Are is an interesting follow up to the first album
For all of you indie rock enthusiasts, the DIIV has released album number two and it is definitely worth giving a listen to.
This much anticipated album is finally here, four years in the wait. Though it breaks long term promises made by Smith on the plans for number two, it shows more intricacy than the previous album, and gives a new look on diiv. With it’s groovy beats and light vocals, Is the Is Are is sure to capture listeners’ attention right from track one.
The album officially hit public ear on February 6th and was produced by band member Zachary Cole Smith and the Captured Tracks label.
There are 17 tracks and each one has it’s own unique style, while still sticking to it’s indie rock/shoegazing feel. However, despite their differences, the tracks all seem to blend together to some extent. This, to me, can be either a good thing, or a bad thing. If you are in the mood to listen to music and not know where one song ends and another begins, this is a great album. Regardless, the entire album has a chill vibe and pulls you in with it’s wonderful instrumentals. They have a sound all their own, somewhat otherworldly, where they are clearly “checked out” of reality, which in turn makes for good music.
Is the Is Are hits a note especially with the teenage population, confused and doubting what is fed to them, as a band like many others before it’s time, who were not “cool” in the popular sense, but goes against the popular, creating something far off the path of “regular”.
