Students See Great Success at Model Legislature
Have you ever wanted to be a politician, debating issues out on the senate floor? Ten Cotter High School students answered yes, participating in Minnesota Model Legislature at the WSU Tau Center on Nov 19 and 20.
The students spent hours meeting in committees and as an assembled congress with 109 students from Winona Senior High School, Austin High School, and Rushford-Peterson High School. Each student presented their own bill to the congress and was given the chance to debate with their fellow members.
Cotter political science teacher Mr. Howard, who was in attendance at the event, said “It was a great opportunity to see politics at its realist, something that can’t be covered in a classroom.”
Students walked away proud at the end of the event, with over half of all Cotter students passing their bills through both the student House of Representatives and Senate; no other school in attendance had this level of success.
Students interested in expanding their knowledge of government should see either Mr. Howard or Mrs. Stevenson about participation in Model Legislature for the 2016 school year.
