Show Choir Concert Rocks St. Cecilia Theater
A highlight of Cotter’s choral year is the annual Show Choir Concert. With the year almost complete, the show choir concert, followed only by Pops Concert the next week, helps to end the year with a bang.
On Tuesday April 28, at 7:30 in the St. Cecilia Theater, the 28 members of the show choir gathered for the year end extravaganza. Featuring the show choir, Timeless, Divas, and many solos and duets, there was sure to be a song for every taste.
The night started off with Ryan Ortega and Josh Forst singing a rendition of Mary Poppins’ “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” Following the opening number, came a three-pack of show choir songs, including “Best Day of My Life,” “Hallelujah,” and “Happy,” which featured soloist Corey Beyer.
After the first set of show choir songs came a line of solos and duets, with some Divas and Timeless pieces thrown into the mix. Starting off the solo lineup were Molly Corcoran-Sanders and Zach Bailey, performing their rendition of the Avett Brothers’ “Offering,” followed by Bailey Hansen and Beth Parlin singing “Four Five Seconds” by Rihanna. Next came Timeless, performing “Carry On Wayward Son” made famous by Kansas, and the Divas’ version of “Next To Me” by Emeli Sandé. Following Timeless and Divas was Corey Beyer, who performed “Ordinary People” by John Legend, and Calli Marg, singing “Not About Angels” by Birdy.
As Marg left the stage, on came the three “knights,” Josh Forst, Ryan Ortega, and Sebastian Welp, performing “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” from Spamalot. After a kickline and group singing session, the knights left the stage, and on came Julia Charron, singing “Out Here On My Own” from the musical Fame. As Charron finished, on came the first family performance of the night, featuring Rosemary and Olivia Flanagan performing “Sing All Our Cares Away” by Damien Dempsey, featuring their father, Tim Flanagan, on the guitar.
Right as one family left the spotlight, on came another. Next in the lineup came Julia and Lori Charron, performing “Somewhere” from West Side Story. As the mother/daughter duo left the stage, on came Timeless once again, to perform the old classic “I Get Around” by the Beach Boys. Rounding out the first group of solos and duets were Ryan Ortega and Beth Parlin, singing “Everything Has Changed” by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
With the first set of solos done, the entirety of the show choir came back on stage to perform “Empire State of Mind” featuring Mac Whaley on the rap solo, and “Falling Slowly” from the musical Once.
As the show choir made their way off the stage, on came the last set of soloists. First up being Brynn Spitzer singing “Human” by Christina Perri, followed by Molly Corcoran-Sanders performing “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane. With the night coming to a quick close, Timeless rounded out their night by performing “Love Potion #9” originally by The Clovers, followed by the Divas’ rendition of “Songs of a Disney Princess” featuring such famous Disney princess songs as “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”, “Part of Your World”, “A Whole New World”, “Colors of the Wind”, and “Reflection”. Rounding out the night for the solos and duets came the last family duo, Zach Bailey and his father, Dan Bailey, performing “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day.
As the show choir joined once again for their final song of the concert, before walking on stage in their newly acquired show choir shirts, Ms. Snyder came out to give a few thanks, and to announce the winner of the annual Show Choir Award. After much anticipation, Snyder announced Julia Charron as the winner. Charron has been in show choir all four years of high school, a part of Divas for three years, and participated in multiple honors choirs. As the Show Choir Award winner exited the stage, on came the entire show choir, to finish off the night with the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
As the night came to a close, and desserts and refreshments were being served in the lobby, the show choir took one final look on the year, and gave themselves a pat on the back for a job well done.
