Softball team takes control of conference race
The softball team has done nothing but impress the Cotter faithful all season long.
After losing a vital seniors class last year, this year’s team has stepped up to maintain the softball program’s high reputation.
“I have never coached a team that has surprised me more,” said Coach Pat Bowlin, “I expected big things from my four returning starters and they have delivered.”
One of those returning starters, Mikala Nelton, had this regarding this years team, “No matter how many games we win and how much we win by, we always know that there are more things to improve on. Whether it is one little tweak about our swing or the way we field ground balls. We always need to keep improving and we are never satisfied.”
So far, the Cotter softball team has scored 130 runs, while opponents have only scored 29. A ratio of almost 4.5 runs to 1.
One reason for this, may be the surprising production by 8th grader Brittany Meier, who leads the team with an astounding .531 batting average. The high production of runs has led the Ramblers to a record of 13-2 (12-0 in conference).
This week has been critical in their run towards a Three Rivers title. The defeated Caledonia 1-0 in a contest where they faced one of the area’s best pitchers. They followed this up with a sweep of Fillmore Central at home to take control of their destiny in the league race.
Despite the amazing record, Nelton also says that, “We always want to get better. We may win by 20 or we may win by 1 but we can always improve and everyone is always open to new ideas that coaches give us. This team is really fun to be on and I hope that everyone can experience being on something this great. I have so much fun with all the people on the team.”
The Ramblers can clinch the conference title with 3 victories over their next 5 games.

Softball is doing good and should make a postseason run but I can’t see them beating Kasson-Mantorville
