Rambler tennis, Ortega both going strong

With the change of weather there’s also been a change in fortunes for Cotter sports, and the tennis team is helping lead the charge, led by the team’s best player, sophomore Ryan Ortega.

After seven matches, the team has worked its way to a 4-3 record, and has faced some strong competition heading into the teeth of the conference schedule.

“We’ve had a really good start to the season,” said Ortega. “We were lucky to face the toughest teams at the beginning of the season, so the rest of the season will be fairly easy.”

Cotter also fared well in a non-conference tournament in Madison, Wisc. “We played three schools that all had over 1,000 students, and we ended up winning two of the matches, and only losing one,” Ortega commented.

Orgeta has also had an impressive season so far this year. With a personal record of 5-2, he is picking up where he left off after his successful freshman year at #1 singles. In a recent match, Ortega faced the third ranked player in Minnesota class A rankings, but ended up losing an extremely close match.

Teammate Carlos Morera, senior, had this to say about Ortega, “Ryan is the captain of the varsity team, and he’s really good at being the leader. He’s fun to work with, but he’s also a really funny guy.

Haven’t been to a match yet this year? Don’t worry about it, there’s still time to see the tennis team play, with a dozen left before the season ends.  The team plays its home matches on the courts between the dorm and the right field baseball fence.
