Lake City knocks out Girls team despite solid performance

One of the best all-around performances by the girls basketball team fell short due to a lack of timely shooting down the stretch of a first round playoff game vs. Lake City last Thursday night.

The  highly anticipated game in Lake City, between the 4th seeded Tigers and the 5th seeded Ramblers ended in a 59-49 victory for the home team.  The final score doesn’t reflect the tightly contested nature of the game.

Lake City had a decided height advantage and controlled the battle on the boards throughout the night.  The Ramblers countered with their trademark pressing defense to force the Tigers into over 20 turnovers.

With the game about to begin, an estimated 45 of Cotter’s faithful student section arrived ready to wreak some havoc.  Within the first 10 minutes of the game, the 6th Man Megacorps  experienced a mandatory relocation and an ejection, as a senior was tossed for contesting the call of a referee.

“I’m glad I could go out for a good cause,” stated the outraged fan. “School spirit is nothing to be ashamed of.”  The crowd consensus seemed to be that the fan’s comment to the ref was ill-timed but not profane.  The fan was suspended from the gym and forced to wait outside for the rest of the game.

The score went back and forth until the halftime buzzer rang, leaving Lake City up 25-24. The second half proved much the same as the first, with many lead changes and  scoring runs by either team.

Unfortunately though, the Cotter girls played their last game of the season, after having to foul the Lake City player with 30 seconds, and failing to pull of a miraculous run to cap a ten point deficit.

“It was a tough team to play but we played hard,” said senior guard Cora Arnold.  Both Arnold and fellow senior Kelly Vaselaar had outstanding games, Kaylin Zukowski and Leah Koll also played their last game in blue and white. The leading scorer for Cotter was Gabby Bowlin, with 18 points.
