Winter Runs Can Be Fun!
A new activity has surfaced in the form of an outdoor running club…but in the winter?!
Cotter’s Winter Running Club is for students, grades 7-12, who enjoy running, anywhere.
Tom Reigstad, chemistry teacher, leader, and creator of the club, didn’t like the drop off in the seasons of running and wanted it to change.
“I didn’t like how fall had cross-country, spring had track, and winter had nothing.” Reigstad said. “I know some kids here like to run, so I thought “Why not start a club for the winter months?””
Students are welcomed daily with no “official” members in the club. “Some students will show up on a consistent basis and others come occasionally.” Reigstad said. “Not everyone can make it every day.”
The club will take runs around the lakes, up Garvin Heights, and around Prairie Island here in Winona. For now, they only run in the city. In the future, they may go to other areas to run but Winonaoffers plenty of variety or routes for now.
Practices are one to two hours and are usually right after school. They usually stretch, run several miles, work on their core in the fitness center, and then they’re done.
The Winter Running Club is open to anyone and students may join at anytime. Interested students should see Mr. Reigstad’s classroom (Room 204 RB) for information on what to bring and wear.
