Happy Day for Cunningham: Senior hits game winner
The Cotter varsity basketball team now has something they haven’t had all year long — a win streak.
The boys team is on a two game win streak after a thriller of an ending in Tuesday’s contest against the Kingsland Knights.
The game started off with back and forth lead changes, until the buzzer rang for halftime, and the Ramblers were up 28-26. Throughout the second half, Cotter kept the lead, only to lose it in the late stages of the game.
The morale of the crowd at the John Nett Center ebbed, as Cotter had only been in a lot of close battles, but had come up just short in most of them.
The Ramblers were determined to make this outcome different.
Tied 56-56 going in to the final 20 seconds of the game, the Ramblers started their offense. The ball moved around and around, while the clock kept ticking away.
Due to Kingsland shutting down the passing lanes, senior guard Henry Killen knew he must attack.
As the clock counted down from 8 seconds, Killen drove towards the basket, only to meet a wall of Kingsland players. It appeared that he was trapped and the clock would run out.
Instead, Killen directed a brilliant pass between the legs of the Kingsland defender in the direction of Carter Cunningham on the opposite side of the lane. The big man gathered it and laid the ball in the basket as the clock hit 2 seconds. Cotter was now up 58-56.
Kingsland then called a timeout, and called a play which resulted in a desperation heave that fell short and Cotter claimed victory.
“I attacked the hoop, Carter’s guy stepped up to stop me, so I made the next logical pass,” stated Killen, “It just so happened that it was between the defender’s legs.”
“I just went to an open spot and Henry did a great job finding me with the pass,” stated Cunningham. “I was initially surprised he got the ball between the defenders legs.”
Jonah Spiten tallied 20 points, while Josh Forst and Logan Devorak both posted 10, and Henry Killen chipped in 7 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
