Cotter gets set for State semifinals

Cotter, Minnehaha Academy, Holy Family and Breck, have reached the semifinals of the Class A State Soccer tournament. With matchups Thursday between #1 seed Holy Family and #5 Breck, while #2 Minnehaha squares off with #3 Cotter. Breck/Holy Family is at 5:00 on Thursday, NOvember 4, and Cotter/Minnehaha follow at 7:00. The semifinals and finals are at US Bank Stadium.
The winner of these two games will play at 6:00pm at U.S. Bank Stadium on Saturday, November 6, 2021 for the championship. The loser of these two games will play at 1:00pm at W St Paul Athletics Ctr on Friday, November 5, 2021 for third place.
The MSHSL girls state soccer tournament started on October 26, 2021. The teams Holy Family Catholic, Fairmont, St. Anthony Village, Breck, Minnehaha Academy, Proctor, Winona Cotter, and St. Cloud Cathedral all qualified to be in the state tournament. In the first round, Holy Family Catholic beat Fairmont, Breck beat St. Anthony Village, Minnehaha Academy beat Proctor, and Winona Cotter beat St. Cloud Cathedral.
Holy Family Catholic is 14-2-2. Their key players are: Maeve Kelly, Maggie Dowling, Mary Furlong. Breck is 9-4-4. Their key players are: Katie Theissen, Dylan Baker, and Maggie Mixon. Minnehaha Academy is 14-2-2. Their key players are: Berit Parten, Gabrielle Wamre, Greta Carlson. Cotter is 16-1-2. Their key players are: Olivia Gardner, Sera Speltz, Allyssa Williams, and Ava Killian.
Cotter keys to their matchup are keeping Parten, a fast forward, and the team’s leading scorer in check. Cotter’s experience offense will be counted on to put the ball in the net. Cotter has a lot of seniors who will be looking for a chance to go out on top. In addition to Gardner and Speltz, midfielder Megan Morgan, goalies Tess Mullen and Sofia Sandcork, forward Amaiya Kaphusman, and defenders Esme Brandvik and Megan Costello will have a chance to finish their careers as champions.
