Girls soccer takes down D-E in key conference match
A Three Rivers Conference title was on the line and the Ramblers girls soccer squad stepped up to stake their claim to it.
Behind goals by Alyssa Williams and Ava Killian, the Ramblers defeated Dover-Eyota 2-0 on Thursday, September 30, in front of a strong home crowd at Cotter fields
Cotter and Dover met again after a 3-3 tie in their first match up on September 14, in Dover. D-E’s home field is a synthetic turf field, whereas Cotter plays on grass, on turf the ball travels faster, which is what Dover is used to, but Cotter has been undefeated on grass fields over the past few years.
Williams scored in the first half and Killian’s goal came on a crossing pass from Lilly Herber.
The girls had strong preparation for this game, they had competitive practices all week and lifting in the weight room. Their focus was on attacking every ball and not getting beat over the top by D-E’s forwards and striker.
Cotter was without one of their best players Sera Speltz. During a game two weeks ago she strained her quad and has been out since then. Also missing were starting senior defender Megan Costello, and sophomore Annie Modjeski.
“This game was especially fun because Cotter and Dover have been rivals for a long time. We also celebrated our parents before this game, so we wanted to win for them,” Cotter senior Megan Morgan said.
In addition to the win over D-E, two Ramblers, Olivia Gardner, and Alyssa Williams have been nominated for the girls soccer top performer of the week award, which is awarded to one player in the State each week.
