“Give Me A C!” — Cheer squad returns to Cotter

Cotter has been looking for ways to pump up school spirit and one intrepid student took it upon herself to make it happen. Thanks to her efforts, there will be cheerleaders at some home football and basketball games this year.

It’s been about 15 years since Cotter had a cheer team, and Zoey Aune, sophomore, decided it was time for a change. Currently they cheer for home football games but plan to cheer for basketball games as well.

Aune had wanted to start a cheer team last year, but it didn’t get enough attention. To get the team approved, Aune took it into her own hands. First she brought the idea to the Athletic Department and received approval. The next step was Sr. Judy’s office, after Sr. Judy gave approval, tryouts were held in the John Nett Center.

Six students joined the squad to spread Cotter spirit during home games. Adviser Kim Whipple hold practices every Saturday from 9-11am in the  Nett Center.

“We hope to get more practices set up during the week” Aune says.

Currently members are using slightly mismatched uniforms since there is no budget for updated clothing. Members are brainstorming fundraising ideas to earn money to back uniforms.

“I hope to see more people becoming interested in our team,” Aune says “and I’m really glad I can be a role model for the younger girls in the WACS community!”
